Because of modern-day eating patterns and busy schedules, our digestion undoubtedly has become a stress point of a hectic lifestyle. Acidity, bloating, constipation, gastric trouble, and flatulence are common ailments that we struggle with every single day. Gas, especially, is a stomach issue which happens when too much air is swallowed with food or generated by our body during digestive processes. It is common knowledge that certain foods tend to cause more gas than others which may often lead to embarrassing situations. We have collated a list of less-known foods that can cause flatulence and are best avoided if you are commonly troubled by the condition.

Here Are 6 Foods That You Didn’t Know Could Cause Flatulence:

1. Onions

Not just Rajma, but even the onion you cook it in could cause flatulence. Onion contains fructose, which breaks down in digestion to form gas. Thus, always consume onions in moderation if you are frequently troubled by flatulence.

2. Chewing Gum

While we do not consume chewing gum by itself, the process of chewing it tends to trap a lot of air in our digestive system. This air is then released from the digestive tract in the form of gas. In fact, the sugar component in many chewing gums may further enhance this effect.

3. Popcorn

Bingeing on popcorn is one of our favourite pastimes while watching a movie. However, did you know that it could actually be causing flatulence in your body? Popcorn is a whole grain which is difficult to be fully broken down by the body. This is especially in the case of overconsumption. Further, popcorn is high in salt which is known to cause bloating in the body.

4. Whole Grains

Nutritionists and dietitians often recommend including whole grains in your diet. But grains such as whole wheat, oats and barley are actually the culprits for many people when it comes to flatulence. In case you are experiencing excessive gas after eating whole grains, you may be gluten-sensitive too, in which case it’s best to consult a qualified nutritionist or doctor.

5. Fizzy Beverages

Fizzy drinks and colas always taste delicious, but they may be to blame when it comes to gastric trouble. As mentioned, the quantity of air that goes through the digestive passage increases when you consume sodas. Thus, keep soda consumption to a minimum if you feel gassy.

6. Cruciferous Vegetables

Certain kinds of vegetables, known as cruciferous vegetables, may cause gas and flatulence if consumed in excess. Avoid cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts as they contain large amounts of complex sugars which release gas.

Do remember that you do not have to cut out these foods from your diet entirely. Check by eliminating one food first and seeing the effect on your digestion. And always remember to consult a nutritionist or qualified medical practitioner before making any major changes to the diet.
