The second edition of Khedan Watan Punjab Dia started at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium here on Tuesday evening, with chief minister Bhagwant Mann declaring the games opened and announcing that jobs would soon be given to hockey players from Punjab who were part of the bronze medal-winning Tokyo Olympics squad.
He said all hurdles in the way of providing the players’ jobs had been removed and these nine players would now be appointed as per their eligibility.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also took on previous state governments, saying that the sports department was being led by the wrong persons and this has affected the promotion of sports adversely.

The CM said 35 competitions will be held in eight age groups during the games and they would, this year, be introducing rugby, cycling, horseriding, wushu, shooting and volleyball in the games. The players will be given cash prizes of Rs 7 crore.
Block-level games will be held from August 31 to September 9, district-level games from September 26 to October 5, and state-level competitions from October 10 to 25.
The CM said the state government was also going to disburse Rs 5.94 crore to 1,807 players who had won medals in state games, but had not been paid the cash prizes due to them.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the new sports policy of the state had for the first time covered Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, along with 35 disciplines in the gradation list.
He said that as a part of the policy, the state government was giving Rs 8 lakh per player to 50 players who had been preparing for the Asian Games slated to be held in China.
Punjab ministers Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Chetan Singh Jauramajra, Aman Arora, Dr Balbir Singh, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Dr Baljit Kaur, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, and Brahm Shanker Jimpa were also present at the event.
