Ending speculation about his potential candidacy in assembly elections in place of his ex-minister father, Bhondsi jail superintendent Suneel Sangwan submitted his resignation to additional chief secretary of the home department on Sunday.
Suneel is the son of Satpal Sangwan, who is former MLA from Dadri.
Suneel gained recognition while serving as Rohtak jail superintendent during the sentencing of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in a high-profile murder and rape case. His handling of the situation earned him accolades from the govt of the day. He was later transferred to Gurugram as jail superintendent and continued in this role until his resignation.
His father is a two-time MLA and former minister who began his political career after resigning an SDO in the telecom department. An ally of the then chief minister Bansi Lal, Satpal contested his first election from Dadri seat on a Haryana Vikas Party ticket in 1996. The Sangwan family considers Bansi Lal their political mentor, but recently aligned with former CM Manohar Lal Khattar when Satpal joined BJP in Sonipat. In 2009, he won the election on a Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) ticket and later joined former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda to support Congress govt, which lacked a majority.
Satpal was appointed minister in Hooda’s government. In 2014, he lost the election on a Congress ticket and was denied a party ticket in 2019, leading him to briefly join Jannayak Janata Party.
Suneel confirmed his resignation, expressing his desire to serve people through politics. “I have worked with honesty and dedication as a jail SP, and I am committed to bringing the same zeal to politics if given the BJP ticket from Dadri,” he said. Both children of Suneel are officers in the Indian Army.
