A Slap on the Face of Society,’ Says Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann on the Death of IPS Officer Y. Pooran Kumar

The Haryana government filed cases against the officials mentioned in a suicide note of former IPS officer Y. Pooran Kumar has been demanded by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwart Mann who met the family of the deceased at his Chandigarh home. Mann claimed that the incident had larger conspiracy whereby the officers in the weaker parts of the society are being harassed when they get to higher levels.

On Saturday, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann termed the murder of an Haryana IPS officer Y. Pooran Kumar as a kick on the face of the society. Having paid a visit to the bereaved family in Chandigarh he advised the Haryana government to ensure that the officers stated in the suicide note of Kumar were severely dealt with without seeking protection of the officers. Mann stated that the government cannot disregard the law to protect its preferred citizens.

The family is absolutely broken to pieces, said Mann. Not sympathy, but justice they are looking to find. In case a high-ranking officer such as Y. Pooran Kumar needs to be pleading the cause of honor, then what remains of the common people? It is not a tragedy, it is a mirror of the biases in our society.

The Punjab CM also accused the case as being a subset of an overall conspiracy to attack the officers of the marginalised groups that do get high-ranking positions. He said educated officers in these communities must weep justice. Is it that hard that some may notice a poor man in power? This is an assault against the Dalit community.

Mann also mentioned recent cases with trolling of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud; he stated that the people that represent the justice and equality are being specifically attacked. He implicated some groups in their attempt to rewrite the Constitution made by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

He further stated that there has been increasing acts of atrocities against Scheduled Castes and this case is a dark reminder of what transpires when discrimination is institutionalised.

CM Mann requests Punjab Governor Intervention.

CM Mann reported that he has asked the Punjab Governor, Banwarilal Purohit who is the Administrator of Chandigarh at the same time, to come in and see a just and fair investigation. The Governor should be able to meet the family and the officials to ensure that the culprits are not left off. The Centre, as well as the Haryana government, will have to act. Anyone is not superior to law, Mann insisted.

He repeated as well that he would personally visit Haryana Chief Minister, Nayab Singh Saini and request him to administer justice to the grieving family in a fearless and unbiased way.
