Boats on Delhi Roads, Colonies Evacuated as More Water Released from Hathnikund Barrage Amid Flood Threat

A number of colonies in the Trans-Yamuna region were flooded after the Yamuna river passed the danger mark in Delhi on Tuesday. The resultant heavy rainfall and release of vast amount of water through the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana has led to the water level of the river swelling fast, threatening to flood the low-lying regions.

In Yamuna Bazar, Mayur Vihar and surrounding areas, water cascaded into houses and authorities appealed to residents to relocate to safer areas. The Yamuna as of 8 am on Tuesday was at 205.80 meters at the Old Railway Bridge, according to authorities, as compared to danger level of 205.33 meters.

The officials announced that 1.76 lakh cusecs of water were discharged at Hathnikund Barrage, 69,210 cusecs at Wazirabad Barrage and 73,619 cusecs at Okhla Barrage. This has caused the river level to shoot up and it is estimated that the river may reach a height of over 206.50 meters between 5 pm and 8 pm on Tuesday.

Low-lying area evacuation order.

Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has encouraged people living in the colonies bordering Yamuna to move out to safer locations. The government has used boats to assist individuals to bring along necessary items to the relief camps. There are reports that houses in Yamuna Bazar, Mayur Vihar, Shahdara, Vivek Vihar, and others of Trans-Yamuna have already been submerged.
