BSF Women Troops To Patrol Pak Border On Horseback

Border Security Force (BSF) in Punjab has decided to deploy additional horse-mounted women police contingents all along India-Pakistan border to enhance vigil.

BSF inspector-general for Punjab frontier Atul Fulzele said on Sunday that they were training BSF women constables in horse-mounted patrolling and their contingents would be deployed after monsoon. He added several women constables had also volunteered for horse-mounted patrolling. A BSF official said that horse-mounted patrolling will enhance coverage over larger areas, particularly in rugged border terrains where vehicular access is challenging, especially during monsoon. This will also improve surveillance and address illegal activities and movements along the border and will serve as a deterrent to intruders and cross-border smugglers. Sources here said that increased deployment of horse-mounted patrolling units was deemed necessary due to recent intrusions and the spotting of suspicious persons in the Pathankot sector. BSF is also establishing a surveillance grid in Gurdaspur sector, which is considered a sensitive area.
