Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Revenue Hit As 67% City Vendors Default

Struggling with poor finances for long, the Chandigarh municipal corporation has failed to boost its revenue from vending fee as more than 67% of registered street vendors have defaulted in the city.

Since 2020-21, the revenue in this segment has gone down significantly.

Out of 10,903 registered street vendors in total, only 3,596 paid the vending fee for 2022-23, fetching MC a revenue of Rs 6.11 crore, which had otherwise crossed Rs 11-crore mark for two consecutive FYs (2018-19 & 2019-20).

Sources said the civic body is not only losing out on revenue, illegal vending is mushrooming in city markets.

As per MC records, a total 3634 sites have currently been allotted to non-essential service providers (N-ESP) street vendors. A total of 2,606 sites are yet to be allotted to the eligible street vendors.

Most defaulting vendors are from N-ESP category. “Defaulters have been given multiple chances in the past to pay the fee. Now their fate will be decided in the upcoming town vending committee (TVC) meeting,” MC sources said.
