Chandigarh to End Solid Waste Dumping at Dadumajra Site in December

Come this December and no unprocessed solid waste will be dumped at the Dadumajra dumping site.

The Chandigarh municipal corporation is in the process of installing a mixed waste segregation machinery which could segregate dry and wet waste from the unsegregated waste with desirable efficiency. The machinery will be set up inside the existing shed at the dumping ground.

The MC has allotted the work for the installation of the machinery. A tender was floated last month, in which five agencies participated. After technical evaluation, a financial bid was opened August 9. Aneie Astechno quoted the lowest rates (Rs 2.33 crore).

“The work will be completed in 4 months’ time. With this, MCC strives to achieve 100% segregation of waste and complete processing of solid waste,” said an MC official.
At present, approximately 130 TPD of dry solid waste and 200 TPD wet waste is being received and processed to produce RDF and compost, respectively.

Currently, 70-80 tonnes per day (TPD) mixed waste is being dumped at the site, which is leading to creation of new dump-mound in the area even as the MC nears complete clean-up of the legacy waste at the nearby older dumping sites.

“The manual segregation of mixed waste is not feasible. As a result, this unsegregated garbage is being transported to the Dadumajra landfill every day without undergoing any processing,” said the official.

After the installation of the machinery, mixed waste brought by tippers will be directly unloaded into the hopper of the machinery for further segregation.
