COVID Vaccine Not Linked to Sudden Deaths: ICMR and NCDC Confirm in Report; Study Focuses on Deaths Among 18–45 Age Group

According to a study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the sudden deaths caused in India by a heart attack are not clearly associated with the COVID vaccine.

The authors studied cases of unexpected deaths between 18 to 45 years. The press release by the Ministry of Health came out on Wednesday. The research proves that the COVID vaccines in India are safe and effective, and serious adverse effects are underrepresented.

The study indicates that there are other possible factors that prompt these sudden deaths, including genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing medical conditions, and the complications after COVID.

ICMR and NCDC Investigating Causes of Sudden Deaths

The genesis of the sudden deaths is being known maximally with two research projects in hand, one of which is carried out using past data, the other one is conducted in real-time, and both are carried out by ICMR and NCDC.

There was no risk of sudden death because of COVID vaccine in the first Study.

It was a study conducted by National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) under ICMR in 47 hospitals in 19 states and union territories between May 2023 and August 2023.

The research was aimed at investigating the individuals who seemed healthy but had sudden death during the period of October 2021-March 2023.

The results showed that there is no greater possibility of sudden death with the COVID vaccine.

Second Study -Genetic Mutation as a leading Cause of Deaths

A study organized in collaboration with AIIMS and ICMR, it will examine the causes of sudden deaths in the young adults.

Initial findings reveal that the main cause of this death during this age group is heart attacks or myocardial infarction (MI).

It is noteworthy that it has shown no major change experienced in the trend of causes of sudden death over the recent years. In the majority of the cases, the condition is associated with mutations.

The research is still underway, and the final results will be posted as and when it is finished.

Side Effects of Covishield and Covaxin – Two Claims

Claim 1 The Covid vaccine Covishield may lead to TTS, risk of a heart attack

April 2024 British drugmaker AstraZeneca conceded that the COVID vaccine it developed might have rare but severe side effects.

Covishield is a drug produced by the Serum Institute of India based on the AstraZeneca formula.

Presented documents to British High Court confirm that the vaccine in rare cases may trigger Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS) that provokes blood clots and a decrease in platelet count.

Claim 2- Covaxin can result in the development of the Guillain-Barre syndrome and blood clotting

The report, published by The Economic Times, mentions a research paper published in the journal SpringerLink that conducted a study at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) that revealed that almost a third of people succumbed to the side effects of Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin.

Among reported cases were respiratory infections, blood clotting and skin disorders.

Researchers observed that teenagers were at a higher risk of this especially the adolescentgirls, and those with allergies.

Menstrual irregularities were the most common among the adolescent girls that constituted 4.6 percent of the participants.

Abnormalities involving eyes (2.7 per cent) and hypothyroidism (0.6 per cent) were also reported.

Also, 0.3 percent had strokes and 0.1 percent were found to have Guillain-Barr Syndrome (GBS).
