Drug lord Kandola convicted under PMLA, son acquitted

Drug lord Ranjit Singh Raja Kandola and wife Rajwant Kaur were convicted and sentenced under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by a court here on Tuesday.

Jalandhar sessions judge Nirbhau Singh Gill sentenced Kandola to nine years of imprisonment and his wife to three years. Their son was acquitted.

Kandola has been convicted even as he, his wife, their son and 11 other accused were acquitted by a Jalandhar court in a case under NDPS Act and Arms Act registered at Kartarpur police station on June 1, 2012, by a Jalandhar court.Kandola faced other cases also.

Investigations against him under PMLA were initiated by Enforcement Directorate after Punjab Police cracked his network and arrested quite a few members of his network. In a 2005, a chargesheet was filed against him. The court also ordered to confiscate properties mentioned by ED, which he acquired with proceeds from drug trade. In Dec last year, the same court had acquitted 14 accused on the grounds that prosecution could not prove its case against them beyond doubt. Dismissed police inspector Inderjit Singh, who was later arrested by special task force (STF) with drugs and firearms, was complainant and investigating officer in the case. He had registered the case at Kartarpur police station.
