Farmers in Uchana Kalan Form Committee for Consensus Candidate Selection

Farmers from the Uchana Kalan segment in Haryana’s Jind district — which is being considered a hot seat this time in the Jat-dominated region — have formed a committee comprising 37 members to carry out a survey for a consensus candidate.

The consensus candidate will take on the Chautala and Birender clans, as is being said.
Uchana Dharna Committee organised a mahapanchayat, which was attended by representatives of 37 villages.

The mahapanchayat decided to form the 37-member committee, which will be expanded to include representatives from all 66 villages in the assembly segment.

The committee will conduct a survey of all villages.

The committee has been formed to free the people of Uchana from the “slavery of politicians who have been deceiving” them for 52 years.

All political parties are in a state of turmoil due to this decision and there is a possibility that a major political party may give a ticket to the consensus candidate.

“If this happens, it will be a historic victory for the people of Uchana,” Azad Palwa, a farmer unionist, said.

This seat has been considered a bastion of former Union minister Birender Singh’s family for the past 50 years but that was snatched by former deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala in 2019 who defeated Prem Lata by a margin of over 48,000 votes.
Now both families have been facing ire of farmers and locals.

Naina Chautala, mother of Chautala, had suffered a significant setback from this segment in the recently held Lok Sabha polls who just secured 4,210 votes.

Farmers have been alleging that Chautala secured votes in the name of farmers against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and later sat “in the lap of the saffron party and formed an alliance govt”, as is being discussed.

Similarly, farmers have been opposing Brijendra Singh strongly following his stand in support of now repealed three farm laws.

IAS officer-turned-politician Brijendra Singh had quit the BJP prior to the LS elections and joined the Congress party but failed to get a ticket from Hisar but is now seeking a ticket for assembly elections. Farmers have been urging Congress top brass to ignore Singh’s family, else they “will contest assembly polls from this seat”.
