Good News Delhi: No Age Limit For Non-Polluting Vehicles In The UT
The Delhi government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to review its 2018 judgement that has banned the use of any diesel vehicle that is above 10 years old and petrol vehicle that is above 15 years old in the Delhi-NCR region. The petition maintains that having a ban on the basis of age is very outdated and it is unreasonable to penalize even vehicles which are road worthy and do not cause pollution killing middles class owners the most.
The appeal has come in the face of increased criticisms to the July decision by Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) that requires an end to fuel supply to motor vehicles that have reached end-of-life. Solid criticism by people and termination of action by the Delhi government has subsequently pushed back that order to November 1.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed the development informing that things have really transformed since 2018.
The state of affairs 2025 is nothing like it was in 2018 and there exist numerous technologies nowadays. We desire to inform the honourable court and that is the reason we were filing the review,” Mr Sirsa told.
Mr Sirsa concluded, that a polluting vehicle should be banned, whether it is five years old or fifteen. The pollution should be used as a criterion not the age of the vehicle.”
The petition apprates that the continuation of 2018 ruling will result in even the BS-VI compatible vehicles being de-registered in the upcoming years without the scrupulous support of science. It raises the question as to why even BS-IV vehicles owned by people who have taken Pollution Under Control (PUC) tests are being sitched out and that decisions have to be made by using newer emissions facts.
