Mandi, Himachal Pradesh- The excessive rainfall has played havoc in Mandi region once again. The cloudburst was so devastating because it destroyed several areas in Mandi city. Three deaths related to water flow in Jail Road region have been confirmed so far. The body of one of the women became trapped between cars that were under rubble and it took a lot of work to get the body out.
There were a number of individuals trapped under rubble that were pulled out by smashing windows. All the educational establishments of Mandi Sadar have been directed to close down on the day. Numerous smaller and bigger vehicles were covered or washed away by the flood. Beside Jail Road, other parts such as palace colony, Zonal Hospital and other neighboring regions were severely affected.
The teams of the police, NDRF, Home Guard, and Fire Department are conducting rescue and relief activities. The deceased have been revealed as Balbir Singh (son of Krishna Singh); Amanpreet Singh (aka Sunny, son of Darshan Singh) and Sapna (wife of Darshan Singh). Darshan Singh sustained injury and was hospitalized in the Regional Hospital in Mandi.
People were in terror overnight. On the next morning, some of the leaders and officers had already visited the troubled location; they included the Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur, MLA Anil Sharma, Mayor Virendra Bhatt, Commissioner Rohit Rathore, and SP Sakshi Verma.
Residents in their adjacent homes are petrified because the streams flowing in Suketi, Sakodi and overflowing Beas are terrifying to people. There were heavy landslides atop PWD circle office at Dharampur and the office of the Superintendent Engineer. There are also reports confirming automobiles buried under the rubbles.
National highways between Chandigarh and Manali and Pathankot and Mandi are still blocked since last night. Landslides have been taking place in such places as 4 mile, 9 mile, Dwara and Jhalogi. The rains persist and the relief efforts are being hindered by the pounding rain and a landslide is reported near Victoria Bridge.
Leaders Review Relief Work; CM Offers Condolences
This morning Jairam Thakur paid a visit to relief operations in Jail Road where the Deputy Commissioner of Mandi and MLA Anil Sharma also joined him. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu lamented over the event and said that this is unfortunate and condoled the departed families.
He added that the governance is on red alert and everything that needs to be done as far as relief and rescue operations are concerned is being done within a short time. CM himself is personally supervising the affairs and ordered to give immediate help to the authorities.
He also acknowledged the local residents, who assisted in the operations and guaranteed people that the state government was fully with them. He also asked citizens to observe the safety rules and be careful.
