A wave of shock spread in Kannur, Kerala, after the sudden death of State Forest Minister A. K. Saseendran’s niece and her husband. Their burnt bodies were discovered a day before in their house in Chirakkal. The dead person was identified as 67-year-old Sreelakha A. K. and her 76-year old husband Premararajan P. K. who reside alone because their son is working in a foreign country.
The police reported that the incident was discovered at around 6 pm on Thursday when the driver of the car used by the couple got to their house to get the vehicle so that they could go and pick up their son who had come back to the country. The home was on the inside locked and on several occasions, after knocking, there was no answer. The neighbours and relatives broke the door and brought out the bodies.
In the course of investigation, police discovered mutilations on the head of Sreelakha and discovered a blood-stained hammer in the house. They are even suspicious that she might have been killed and the bodies burnt before they were discovered. Police were informed that the last time they saw the couple was on Wednesday by neighbours. No sign of forced entry into the house, however, said officers.
A case of unnatural death has been registered and an investigation initiated by Baliapattam police. Definitive cause of death will be identified after the post-mortem, which will be on Friday.
