Rains in J&K; rescue operation underway in landslide and flash flood-hit areas

The fourth day of incessant downpour on Wednesday (August 27, 2025) caused havoc in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir with thousands of people being evacuated in the flooded low-lying areas.

A rescue operation itself is underway along the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine route near Adhkuwari, where a landslide hit on Tuesday, killing 9 pilgrims and injuring 21 others, officials said.

According to officials, a flash flood swept away 10 residential houses and a bridge in an inaccessible Margi region of the Kishtwar district but there were no immediate reports of any casualty.

The Srinagar district in the Kashmir Valley has been lashed by rains, where more than 12 paramilitary officials also ended up trapped in a flooded village in the Kathua district and efforts are underway to get them to the safety past the flooded area.

The rains lashing entire Jammu region since the last 24 hours did not show any signs of abatement with most of the water bodies including Tawi, Chenab, Ujh, Ravi and Basanter flowing several feet above the danger level, they added.

The main Jhelum river here on Wednesday morning was at just two feet below the flood-alert mark of 18 feet and the main one at Sangam in the Anantnag district has crossed the flood-alert mark of 21 feet-mark causing floods in the areas.

More than thousands of people have been moved to safer grounds in the low lying areas of Jammu and Kashmir particularly along the river banks.

The officials have reported a massive damage caused to the public infrastructure, including several key bridges across the Union Territory over the spillages of water bodies and flash floods.

Train services up and down Jammu were restored after remaining suspended all through the day

The resumption of train services to and fro Jammu on Wednesday, (August 27, 2025) came as a relief as six trains were to operate on their routes after a one-day suspension due to sub-optimal conditions, accordingly to the officials.

Northern Railway on Tuesday (August 26, 2025) night cancelled 22 incoming and outgoing trains at Jammu and Katra although 27 trains were short-terminated at various stations in the division due to heavy rain that lashed over the region.

Train services have resumed Jammu. Special trains that were scheduled to leave on Sunday and that were either cancelled or short-terminated will run today, an official of the railways said.

As per the PRO of Jammu Division, 6 restored trains earlier cancelled and three trains short-terminated at various places.
