UP: Jatav Community’s Homes Were Burned Down, Justice Served After 34 Years

During the wedding ceremony of a Dalit in Panwari village, Agra, an argument in the wedding procession on June 21, 1990, caused great unrest. Ever since then, 34 years ago, 36 have been found guilty in the Panwari case and 15 have been cleared of all charges.

After a long wait, the Panwari case of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, has got its final verdict. The SC/ST Special Court in Agra found 36 people guilty and acquitted 15 others because evidence was lacking. Police are still looking for three persons who have gone missing from bail conditions. Twenty-seven of the defendants have passed away since the caste violence case from 1990 took place.

The police station at Sikandra in Agra was where the incident happened. On that day, Mundra was getting married to Vishwajit Gurjar during a ceremony in Panwari village. The group accompanying the groom came from the Nagla Padma area under the Sadar police station. There were accusations that the Jats forbade the procession from coming near their homes.
