Z, Z +, SPG, X, Y, and Y +. These are the six primary security classifications offered to VVIPs in India. The Special Protection Group (SPG), which is exclusively available to the prime minister and his family members who live with him or her, is at the top of the list. An Act of the Indian Parliament established SPG in 1988. The squad consists of about 3000 officials, including diligently trained and well-behaved dogs.

In 1985, SPG was established. Following VP Singh’s ascension to power in 1989, Rajiv Gandhi’s security was initially removed.

However, following Rajiv Gandhi’s 1991 assassination, the government changed the SPG rule to grant previous prime ministers’ families at least ten years of SPG coverage. In 2003, this law underwent yet another amendment.

The SPG’s strict security measures also cover current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Even when it comes to the prime minister’s itinerary, the SPG officials will have the last word. This was evident during PM Modi’s carefully orchestrated visit to Kanyakumari on Thursday, which was organised by the security team. In order to perfect the Prime Minister’s security measure, the SPG will spend up to Rs 1.62 crore every day.

The monthly salary of an SPG commando ranges from Rs 84,236 to Rs 2,39,457. According to online media DNA, an SPG security officer makes Rs 13.2 lakh a year. In addition to the three protective vests they wear while on duty, these commandos are entitled to elite security. The Z+ security officials should also be skilled in unarmed combat training and martial arts.

While on duty, the authorities should also maintain a neutral expression. The SPG’s weaponry include the Glock 17 automatic handgun, the FN Herstel F2000 rifle, and the FN P90 machine gun. Applying for SPG employment requires graduation from any accredited educational institution.
