Will Jammu and Kashmir Get Full Statehood? Supreme Court to Hear Petition on August 8

In 2019, Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act was voted in Parliament to remove Article 370 on Jammu and Kashmir. It was on this act that the state was reconstituted to form two union territories which include Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. This practically bifurcated the states that existed. Demands of restoration of statehood of Jammu and Kashmir had been going on continuous basis in the last six years. The next step is that the matter is most probably likely to be heard in the Supreme Court in August 8.

On August 8, a petition is likely to be heard in the Supreme Court which requests the Centre to grant Jammu and Kashmir its statehood back.

Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan referred to the case on a bench headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran on Tuesday. According to Sankaranarayanan, the date recorded on the supreme court web site is August 8. Remove it should not.”

As Soon as is possible, Statehood should be Restored.

On August 5, 2019, Jammu and Kashmir have Article 370 revoked. Later again, on December 11, 2023, the Supreme Court decided that this move was also constitutional. The Supreme Court upheld by unanimous verdict to withdraw Article 370.

Meanwhile, the court directed that Assembly elections be conducted in Jammu and Kashmir by September 2024 and restored its statehood “promptly.”

A petition was also filed last year in the Supreme Court that sought directions to the Centre to within two months restore its statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. This plea is made by educationist; Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and socio-political activist, Khurshid Ahmad Malik. This was the purport of the petition:

All the other stuff was omitted. I think I would like to continue it–when you write, tell me.)
