The Chairperson of the Haryana State Commission for Women, Renu Bhatia, has lashed out at the Director General of Police (DGP) of Haryana over alleged sexual assault case in police department. Bhatia alleged that the DGP is protecting an IPS officer Sumit Kumar who is accused of sexual harassment of women police employees.
Bhatia stated that the Commission has received a complaint of sexual harassment against the IPS officer, Sumit Kumar, who was previously posted as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jind. The Commission has found the complaint to be genuine and has recommended action against the officer.
However, Bhatia alleged that the DGP is not taking any action against the accused officer and is instead trying to protect him. She warned that if the DGP does not take any action, the Commission will be forced to take further action.
Bhatia also stated that the Commission will not tolerate any attempts to sacrifice the interests of women police personnel. She demanded that the DGP take immediate action against the accused officer and ensure that justice is delivered to the victim.
Notably Sumit Kumar was transferred from his post as Jind SP to railway SP in Ambala district in October this year following the allegations of sexual harassment. He was posted as the SP Railways in Ambala after this incident of alleged sexual harrasment case levelled by eight women police employees.
Bhatia told the media persons that despite the Commission’s request, the police have not provided the SIT investigation report. She appealed to DGP Shatru jeet Kapoor through the media, saying, “Do not sacrifice the interests of 8 women police officers to save one officer. The Women’s Commission has received a clue in the case and will soon arrest and interrogate the accused. The police’s negligence in this matter is evident, as they have failed to file a report and interact with the victims, indicating that they are trying to protect the accused officer,” she alleged.
