Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Hints at Entering Politics

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat indicated on Tuesday that she will assess offers of joining politics. “There is pressure to join politics but I will take a decision after consulting elderly people,” she said in Jind, where she was attending a programme organised at Khatkar toll plaza.

Asked whether she had retired from wrestling, Vinesh said, “When my mind is clear, I will think about what to do next.I am in a deep shock after the Olympics disqualification.”
When asked if she would continue with sports or venture into politics, Phogat smiled: “I will do both.”

In a reply to a query about Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Singh’s statement that Vinesh Phogat should not enter politics, she said, “Don’t ask me about controversies. Who is Sanjay Singh? I don’t know him.” Addressing the audience, she said: “I am a proud daughter-in-law of Jind, which is the fortress of Haryana. It has been the epicentre of farmers’ agitation against now repealed three laws. I used to cry over the plight and mistreatment of farmers by the govt. However, farmers fought well and won the battle. Moreover, farmers always supported me well whenever I was in trouble.”
