Fatal Accident Triggers Protest and Violence in Mohali

An angry mob attacked a police team and vandalised a vehicle in Mohali a few hours after a youth died in a road accident. The incident occurred around 3 am on Thursday when cops under Balongi police station went to pacify the protesters who had placed the body in the middle of the road, demanding arrest of the driver of a van involved in the accident.
The accident occurred around 1 am when Sagar and Mithun, riding a motorbike, were allegedly hit by a milk transportation van under the flyover on Kharar highway in Balongi.While Sagar was killed, Mithun was injured and was taken to the civil hospital by a passerby. The milk van driver fled the spot, leaving the vehicle at the scene, said Balongi police SHO inspector Sumit Mor.

Following the accident, the relatives and friends of Sagar reached the spot in large numbers.

The SHO said according to the investigating officer, the situation was grim as locals had surrounded the body and were protesting and raising slogans, not allowing the police to take the body to the mortuary. More police force was summoned to the accident spot, and the SHO himself rushed to the location.

When the SHO tried to pacify the agitated mob, protesters started manhandling the police, leading to a scuffle. It was then, the mob attacked cops with stones, damaging the official vehicle and causing minor injuries to a few police personnel.

Thereafter, the police registered an FIR against 25 to 30 unidentified miscreants.Police have booked the milk van driver on charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
